3. Student stipend programOur incomparable religion exhorts us to extend a helping hand to the needy, seeking thereby the great reward that Allah has promised, as well as blessings, increase and growth. From this starting point, and taking into consideration the bitter reality through which so many Muslim societies are living, under the shadow of difficult economic conditions that make it hard for many people to obtain their basic daily needs―particularly students, as a result of the meltdown of some national economies, unemployment or scarce employment opportunities and the inability of many families to find the means of basic livelihood―the University initiated this program to provide basic economic aid to individual students to relieve them of the financial worries and obstacles that would otherwise prevent them from completing their studies at the University. It is an attempt to help the needy and to make brotherhood and Islamic solidarity a reality. The amount of money the University gives to each recipient student is $300 (US dollars) per semester (approximately four months). This stipend makes it possible for the student to meet his/her basic needs, and it provides an important incentive for him to complete his/her university studies. In order to find deserving recipients, the University distributes detailed questionnaires and lays down comprehensive guidelines by which it is possible to accurately determine the economic status of the student, making sure that the information on the aid application matches that on the registration and all other information in the comprehensive student file. A comprehensive social status file is opened for the aid recipients in order to properly administer aid to them. Al-Madinah International University is striving to develop a generation of university graduates with the qualifications to bear responsibility, a vanguard that takes pride in Islamic values, possesses personal integrity, and takes an active, productive role for the betterment of their societies. In connection with this, the University does not restrict its aid to financial disbursements; it also provides part-time employment opportunities for those students with qualifications and skills that make it possible for them to assist the University in chores the University requires. The aim is to instill a work ethic and attitude of persistence in the students. Therefore, the University invites our generous and philanthropic brethren to share with us in this area of good works and charity, so that they may gain a double reward with a single stroke: First there is the reward of zakah, for these students qualify as among its legal recipients, being either from the utterly impoverished (fuqara’) or the needy who find the means to fulfill some but not all of their basic needs (masakin). Second, there is the reward for ongoing charity, for by enabling them to seek beneficial knowledge you will have the reward for teaching them and the reward for teaching, through them, future generations of Muslims. You can make payments to the Aid for Needy Students Program by any of the following means:
