Charitable Endowment Projects to Establish Basic Resources for the University PDF Print E-mail

As mentioned earlier, Al-Madinah International University was founded recently as a non-profit educational institution to extend university-level educational services to individuals of the Muslim Ummah.

The nature of newly established educational institutions is that they are in great need of many basic resources and capital in order to discharge their proper role and fulfill their mission.

By the help of Allah, and then the generosity of the University’s founders, and without other resources, the University has gone a long way to assembling the basic foundational requirements for its mission. However, considering the vast geographical area the University aims to serve and the large numbers of students from all over the world who would like to study at the University, the University is in need of additional basic infrastructure that will enable it to deliver its educational services at an acceptable standard for electronic education and distance learning. That is beside the fact that such fundamental infrastructure is one of the requirements for full accreditation by the supervising agencies for higher education.

Therefore, the University is throwing the doors wide open for the participation of our brothers in the Muslim world whom Allah has given abundant means to help the University meet its goals of raising the status of the Muslim Ummah and bringing about its renaissance. And that goal is not the responsibility of just one entity or group. It is the responsibility of every member of this Ummah in proportion to the means Allah has given them.

The present infrastructure needs of the University are as follows:

1. Establishing and supporting satellite teaching centres of the University

These will provide educational and guidance services to students and the local societies. Contributions for this purpose can be made in the following ways:
  • First, to adopt an entire center. You would adopt the entire center as a waqf, and it would be named after you, a person you nominate, or by any name of your choosing. The yearly operating expenses associated with adopting a center are $1,200,000.00 (just one million two hundred thousand US dollars). This includes all the operating and infrastructure expenses, plus a number of scholarships for the students studying at the center, as well as annual salaries for the instructors teaching at the center. For more information about this topic, you can contact us at the address found below.

  • Second, sponsoring the expenses for setting up a new center and completely equipping it with computers, a working library and the educational infrastructure that makes it ready to fulfill its required instructional, societal and educational roles. To set up a medium-sized center that is able to teach 1000 students a year will cost $187,000.00 (one hundred eighty-seven thousand US dollars). The infrastructure necessary for a center includes a computer lab with Internet connections, a library hall with Internet connections, classrooms, a general lecture auditorium, administrative and academic offices, and technical support.
2. Support for establishing and building electronic systems at the University
Since Al-Madinah International University is an electronic university that relies upon modern technology and programming, the University has striven to produce a number of software programs that will meet the academic, instructional and administrative needs of the University and all those persons associated with it. These programs include systems to maintain the overall electronic environment of the University, administration of interactive instruction, the University’s e-mail system, and the University’s systems in general. In addition to this, there are expenses associated with staying abreast of the latest technological developments. The average yearly expenses required of the University to support the upgrading of its technical systems amount to $311,000 (three hundred eleven thousand US dollars). 3. Creating academic instructional technical content

Instructional content is one of the pillars of learning at Al-Madinah International University. The University possesses the best technical, instructional and educational expertise that enables it to produce content that enables the student to thoroughly understand the curriculum. The instructional content goes through many developmental stages to make sure that it is methodologically sound and well-produced from an academic, educational and technical point-of-view. The process starts with academic specifications from specialized university professors. It passes through an academic review and approval process from the Qualifications Agency of the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, until the completion of the final product: on-line instructional content.

The curriculum presented to the students includes the following:
  • Complete academic lectures distributed according to the instructional level. They consist of the sound recording of the lecture by a university professor, accompanied by a “whiteboard” written summary of the key points in the lesson. These are linked to reference texts related to the topic, organized in sections that make them easier to understand. To see examples of the instructional content, please click on this link: (http://www.mediu.edu.my/mastertext/Lesson1/default.htm ).

  • Academic and educational content is presented by way of an interactive instructional program known as “Alim”. Through this presentation, the curriculum is explained using recognized educational techniques that help the student to understand the subject on his/her own, especially those points whose understanding requires expenditure of great personal effort. A team of educational and technical experts, specialized in curriculum design and exposition techniques, prepares these presentations. The University is making effort to develop the instructional content of 573 courses covering a wide variety of disciplines in the field of Islamic Studies, as well as administration, finance, education, computer science, Arabic for non-native speakers, and English language workshops; all within the parameters of the first four-year batch of students to go through the University’s program.

In 2008 CE, the University will have to develop 151 courses, especially in the two fields of Islamic Studies, with its range of disciplines, and the Arabic language.

The average total cost of developing a single course is $16,050 (exactly sixteen thousand fifty US dollars). This includes all the stages of development of the course, up to and including the finished product.

It’s worth mentioning that once a course has been developed, by the permission of Allah, it will continue to benefit a number of groups in the society for years to come, including students, their parents, and those wanting to benefit from general reading, viewing of and listening to the material. It can also be of service to Islamic societies in general, for the University has plans to disseminate these courses and make them available by a variety of means to enable the general public to benefit from them.

It is also worth mentioning that this instructional content is sent to the students on CDs to enable them to get the full benefit from them. They can listen to the lectures, read the accompanying written material and the excerpted relevant portions of classical texts as softcopy, or they could print it out in book form. They can also take advantage of their time by viewing the presentations, which further clarify the topics by attractive and interesting methods. All of that will be a splendid contribution to the dissemination of beneficial knowledge in Muslim societies, and it will be ongoing charity that will deliver its reward continually.
