Programs and mode of study
Article 44:
The programmes submitted for postgraduate studies, or the suggested programmes, or the programmes that are amended by the senate, will be based on the recommendation of the board of postgraduate studies that is built upon the suggestions of faculties in this regard, this is require:
- The determination of the programmes and make sure that they meet the requirements stipulated by faculties.
- Provide clarification about any of the new programmes regarding its objectives and academic deliverables.
- Complete all the documents and procedures that are related to the Malaysian Qualification Agency.
Article 45:
The university may establish joint programmes for postgraduate studies between two programmes or more based on rules stipulated by the senate on the recommendation of the board of postgraduate studies.
Article 46:
The study in the postgraduate programmes will be as following:
First: postgraduate programmes by research, classified under (A) structure.
Second: postgraduate programmes by coursework and research, classified under (B) structure.
Third: postgraduate programmes by coursework, classified under (C) structure.
Article 47:
First: postgraduate programmes by research, classified under (A) structure.
In structure A, the candidate is required to prepare a dissertation under the supervision of one of the academic staff to meet the graduation requirements and other requirements stipulated by the respected faculty.
- Master of Philosophy by Dissertation
The degree of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) is a research postgraduate degree. Such a degree shall be awarded to a candidate who:a. Presents a successful dissertation meets the general requirements like:
- Covers the material that is meeting the research requirements.
- Shows sound methodology in the gathering, studying, presenting, formulating, and concluding of materials according to the nature of the subjects.
- Doctor of Philosophy by Dissertation
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research postgraduate degree. Such a degree shall be awarded to a candidate who:a. Presents a successful thesis meets the general requirements like:
- Satisfactorily completes the research requirements.
- Shows sound methodology in the gathering, studying, presenting, formulating, and concluding of materials according to the nature of the subjects.
- The ability to formulate the research in the permitted language with a language quality, correct grammar, and clear expressions.
- Should be an original contribution to knowledge.
b. Satisfies the examiners in an oral examination.

Second: postgraduate programmes by coursework and research, classified under (B) structure
a. The postgraduate studies by research and coursework for master’s degree should be based on the following rules:
- The candidate is required to study in programmes of social sciences and other sciences for (18) hours and dissertation with (3) hours for research methodology subject, which is compulsory for all programmes.
- A minimum of 70% attendance for classes of the subjects is compulsory.
- The candidate may register the research project after he completes two thirds of the study subjects successfully. Once the candidate registered the project, he must be committed to complete and submit it with a minimum period of one semester and maximum of period of study. The candidate is not allowed to submit the project within the first two semesters.
- The board of postgraduate studies assigns a supervisor from the academic staff in the university to supervise the project on the recommendation of the faculty.
- The candidate is required to obtain minimum 3.00 CGPA to be qualified for awarding the master degree.
b. The postgraduate studies by research and coursework for Ph.D. degree should be based on the following rules:
- The candidate is required to study in programmes of social sciences and other sciences for (18) hours and dissertation with (3) hours for research methodology subject, which is compulsory for all programmes.
- A minimum of 70% attendance for classes of the subjects is compulsory.
- The candidate may register the research project after he completes two thirds of the study subjects successfully. Once the candidate registered the project, he must be committed to complete and submit it with a minimum period of 4 semesters and maximum of period of study.
- The board of postgraduate studies assigns a supervisor from the academic staff in the university to supervise the project on the recommendation of the faculty
- The candidate is required to obtain minimum 3.00 CGPA to be qualified for awarding the Ph.D. degree.
c. Postgraduate programmes by coursework, classified under (C) structure
- The postgraduate studies by coursework for Diploma degree should be based on the following rules:
i- The period of study must not be less than 2 semesters and more than 4. ii- The study hours must not be less than 18 hours. iii- The senate determines the subjects that are required to obtain the diploma degree on the suggestion of the respected faculty and the recommendation of the board of postgraduate studies. iv- The candidate is required to obtain minimum 3.00 CGPA to be qualified for awarding the diploma degree. v- It is allowed to mix the diploma and master degrees together as one stage in the programmes taught in the university. In this case, only the joint hours between the master and diploma will be considered from the study hours in the diploma programme, and the CGPA must be 3.00 at least to consider these hours. - The postgraduate studies by coursework for master degree should be based on the following rules:
a. First: The candidate is required to study in programmes of social sciences for (40) hours and research projects or case study with (3) hours for research methodology subject, which is compulsory for all programmes and will not be considered in the CGPA and the total number of study hours. b. Second: The candidate is required to study in programmes of other sciences for (30) hours and research projects or case study with (3) hours for research methodology subject, which is compulsory for all programmes and will not be considered in the CGPA and the total number of study hours. c. A minimum of 70% attendance for classes of the subjects is compulsory. d. The candidate may register a research project or case study in the last semester. Once the candidate registered the project, he must be committed to complete and submit it with a minimum period of 1 semester and maximum of period of study. e. The institute of postgraduate studies is responsible of the agreement on the research project or the case study. And the institute assigns a supervisor from the academic staff in the university on the recommendation of the faculty. f. The candidate is required to obtain a minimum of 3.00 CGPA to be qualified for awarding the master degree.
Article 48:
The session is divided into two main semesters, each semester with a period not less than 14 weeks, without considering the periods of registration and examination, and short semester for not less than 7 weeks in which the period of each subject will be doubled.
Article 49:
The study is in accordance to the rules and procedures approved by the senate in a way which is not inconsistent with the regulation mentioned in this policy.
